Camphill social and religious life

About Us

Social and Cultural Life

In the evenings and at weekends there are many activities and people are encouraged to follow their own interests. This might be participating in an evening college course, such as drama, singing and dancing, or computer skills. Other opportunities include sailing and horse riding, walking and cycling. Visits to a special night club, a concert, play or pantomime are also arranged. Every Friday there is our own “Pub” or film evening in our spacious refurbished hall, and there is a fortnightly music session. Classes in basic skills are held and throughout the winter months different artistic activities are on offer. In the summer months our own swimming pool is open. With Dartmoor and the coast nearby, as well as cities and small towns, there is plenty of choice for days out. Shopping is always popular and the town of Buckfastleigh only a walk away. Everyone has an annual holiday of their choice including the chance for foreign travel.

Religious Life

In harmony with Camphill philosophy, the spiritual life is based on Christian principles. Central to these are the Festivals which are celebrated throughout the year. Often this involves putting on a play. Hard work and much dedication go to making these meaningful and inclusive events, which are very special. Some people choose to attend local churches and there is also the opportunity to join a Saturday evening Bible supper.

Therapeutic aspects

The rhythms of the day, week, month and year within the household and The Community, as well as in relation to the land, provide an essentially therapeutic lifestyle. Anthroposophical art sessions and eurythmy are available and it is possible to consult an Anthroposophical Doctor as well as the local GP.

Management and Finance

We are a charity and non-profit making company. We are self-governing, responsible for our own running and development and work with a board of trustees. Most residents are funded by local authorities through social service contracts. Finance for major developments and renovations, such as our new hall, rely on donations and fundraising activities. Vocational volunteers do not receive a wage but a financial allowance is made and needs are met. Guest volunteers also receive a small allowance. Both full-time and part-time staff are employed in many roles. We are registered for Residential care and funded for supported living through Supporting People.
