Camphill home and work life

About Us

Work Life

The working life is of great importance and every person has the opportunity to do useful work and make their own valuable contribution to the communal life. We believe that the process of work which is of benefit to others has an important role in personal growth and the attainment of human dignity. Personal planning and regular reviews ensure that everyone is given the chance to develop a working style that suits their needs.

Some people choose to work outside Camphill in the local community, mostly in a voluntary capacity. The Community has over 90 acres of land. The farm and garden provide fresh, naturally produced food for the houses, and many people work in these areas as well as on the upkeep of the estate and woodlands. Other people choose to work in the house helping with cooking and cleaning. The workshops provide creative and artistic work of an essentially therapeutic nature, but the Pottery, Weavery, Copperwork and Woodwork also make a range of goods which are sold locally at fairs and our own open days. Day time college courses are an option. For those nearing retirement age, part time work and group or individual activities are available.

Home Life

People live in comfortable self contained households of various sizes. Everyone living in the house shares the daily routine, taking on tasks and working with each other to make their house a real home. Meals are often taken together; a time to share news, make plans or celebrate an occasion. Each person has their own private room as well as the communal living spaces and the wonderful gardens to enjoy. Guest Volunteers from all over the world are welcomed into the houses and they contribute much to the Community.
